Open to all public and private K schools and school districts in western and central Pennsylvania. Everyone partaking in one or more of the activities listed on the Healthy Schools PA Report Card will be distinguished as a participant. Emerging School Schools who have begun to take steps towards becoming a Healthy School by participating in the checklist. High Honor Roll Completion of at least 30 activities listed on report card. Highest Honor Roll Completion of at least 75 activities listed on report card. Recently Michigan Surgeon General Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom and the Michigan Action for Healthy Kids recognized 77 schools for fostering students' healthy eating and physical activity habits and tobacco-free lifestyles.
Research shows healthy students do better academically, have better attendance, and have fewer behavioral problems. Accomplishments include increasing availability of fruits, vegetables, milk and whole grains; promoting healthy habits to our school and staff members, and improving breakfast options that ensure all students a healthy breakfast.
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years. Overweight and obese children have higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those children who are not overweight or obese. Type 2 diabetes has been shown to be associated with metabolic and cardiovascular complications. The CDC states that healthy eating and physical activity lowers risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes.
Children are specifically influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, and schools. They also provide opportunities for students learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. The Steps to a Healthy School website was developed by a team of experts devoted to improving the health and academic outcomes of Michigan students. The team came together to collect and suggest resources, curricula, best practices, and funding opportunities to help schools improve their nutrition and physical activity environment.
The website and each of the five steps will continue to be updated with new information and resources. The goal of the website is to serve as a one-stop location for schools that walks them through the steps to create a healthier school.
